Will Web Design Be Automated?

Categories

Automation has taken a prevalent role in society as more and more jobs are being done with little to no human assistance. AI has played a major part in this change and you can see how it’s changed the world through systems like Siri, Alexa, And Google Assistant.

However, with these changes, there’s one question that many web developers are asking. Will web design be automated too? Let’s take a look.

Can Web Design Be Automated?

The short answer to this question is no. And possibly yes. While it’s technically possible that web design will be fully automated down the road, it’s a long way off. There are too many technical details and variables for web design to be automated soon.

Even if portions of it are, there will still need to be a developer overseeing everything that’s done. Here are a few reasons why developers shouldn’t start sweating about losing their jobs.

The Future Of AI

To understand the automation of web design, it’s important to look at the role of AI throughout the last few years, as well as where it’s heading. The purpose of AI thus far has not been to oversee, but to be overseen. Automation in the workplace has taken jobs, for sure, but only “basic” jobs such as a machine assembly line, which still needs to be overseen.

Automation is effective in doing what it’s programmed to do, but it cannot think outside the box and adapt to innovative solutions, at least for now. That being said, portions of web design are already being automated.

Portions Of Web Design Are Already Automated

Currently, several available platforms serve to simplify the web design process. However, they are still somewhat limited. WordPress is an example of one such platform.

WordPress enables its users to develop websites without having to code. Instead, they use the themes and plugins provided for them. This automation cuts out an immense amount of work on the developer’s part.

However, while WordPress is extremely helpful, it somewhat lacks when it comes to customization as it uses a PHP language. This means that if you want to develop a custom WordPress plugin or theme, you need to hire a WordPress developer.

Web Design Is Unique

Web design is unique from other fields in that the creative process that goes into cannot currently be replicated. Sure, there are templates and themes to choose from, but organizing those themes and templates into pages that suit the client’s desire still takes human involvement.

While web design may be fully automated someday, it’s still very far away. Too many aspects of web design rely on human involvement. That being said, AI is a valuable tool that has proven its worth when utilized in web design. It will be interesting, to say the least, to see the role AI plays in web design as it continues to evolve.
